How can people claim the moral high ground, when they are immoral themselves?

It often seems that the very immoral claim moral high ground, they talk about all the things they don't do, like smoking, sex and drugs, and yet they do some very mean things like putting others down. Of course they do their immoral stuff "nicely" so they will look nice to others. Like that widow probably goes to church and stuff.
